About a month ago, Reef Builders, and also Advanced Aquarist online magazine, released the results of testing done by Sanjay Joshi and colleagues for a powerhead flow study.

Propeller pump study reveals big differences between flow ratings and actual output

Feature Article: Experimental Comparison of Measured Flow Output of Aquarium Propeller Pumps — Advanced Aquarist's Online Magazine

With many people surprised to see the results, Tunze was asked about the numbers and did intact confirm the test. Here, is their response.

it's funny how they try to make the Vortech's number one selling point out to be a bad thing... They are wide flow. All this video really did was prove that lol. You can actually see the undertow from the vortech in the test. That video resold me on my vortechs! The whole tank gets water movement from the vortech!

Tunze makes great pumps. So does ecosmart. I just think they fill a different gap. I will probably add a tunze or two at some point, but I would do so to fill a different void. They are different products with different strengths. It is sad how so many happy customers started hating on there pumps just because of an article. Those pumps work and have worked great for a long time.

vortech pumps rely on turbulence to get their wide angle of flow many people see to long for. But that wide angle is why you would need 2 pumps for a tank rather than 1. :)

Though, less turbulence will create a more direct flow. That's how you get dead spots of water movement on your sandbed. So I guess in turn, you would still need, say, 3 pumps to prevent dead spots throughout the entire tank.

I know what you mean though. Sure, they might put out 'way less' flow in numbers, but it is a different kind of flow. Just remember that when you buy it. If you want a wider flow, get the vortech. If you want a more direct flow, get a Tunze.

Turbulence isn't a bad thing. They just said it is (an opinion not a fact)... We actively seek turbulence in sps tanks. That's why so many people aim tunze's at each other.

I think you nailed it with... "If you want a wider flow, get the vortech. If you want a more direct flow, get a Tunze."

I would love to see that same test in a tank with rock in it though
