mods feel free to relocate, wasn't sure where to put this...

Let this be a lesson to all. due to space reasons we have two dog cages stacked on top of each other next to the tank. When I did my water change a few days ago I left the empty container on top... (here comes the stupid part) I forgot about and left a partial cup of food soaking on top of the canopy (i know, eeewww). Any way, we were gone a good chunk of the day yesterday so when my wife ran home to let the girls out they got a bit nuts. The lid from the container fell and knocked over the cup, conveniently located above the outlet. thankfully it worked as intended and cut the power! Let this be a lesson! First if you're not hooked into a GFCI do so. Secondly don't be stupid like me and leave water on top of your tank...

Good save by GFCI. About three weeks ago I was putting a small pump for my carbon reactor back in my sump and it literally caught on fire under water when I plugged it in. It shocked the **** out of me and made a pop so loud I though the tank exploded. Probably saved my life. From that point on I will never use another submersible pump and I Tee'd off of my external line.
