Ok, purchased my tank on craigslist a while back. Before I knew anything about anything in the aquarium community. Its a 55 gallon.

It's an older style, so no center brace.

It came with a DIY stand which is pretty solid, however it only supports the tank at the corners/sides. There is no support in the middle and the stand actually doesn't have a solid top.

Now since the stand has an open top only supporting on the sides and the tank doesn't have a center brace is there a chance to overstress the middle of the tank causing a crack? Or is this just crazy talk and no matter how much live rock I could have in the tank it will never be heavy enough to crack the tank. Thanks.

If you give me the right tool, I can crack it. ;) Can you just put a brace in the middle for "just in-case" support?

its difficult because the tank and everything is already set up. Im sure the manufacturers foresaw this problem and didn't make a product they knew was going to break, right?

trust me, it will break! It might not be this month, or even this year but the stress will cause a seam to fail! I had a 135g that was improperly installed on a stand and it was up for 2 years...then about 8 weeks ago it broke at 2 seams and dumped probably close to 200g into my living room. (had to keep adding water in hopes of keeping everything alive overnight in order to get the stuff out into a new tank!)

trust me, dont take the chance, find a proper stand that will support it in the middle
