So I was at a LFS yesterday and during a conversation a salesperson tells me that when you get a tang, any tang, you can pretty much expect to have to deal with ich. Is this true?

Not a given, but they are known to be ich prone.

Yes they are very prone to ich, but whether they actually get it has more do do with how stressed they get in the process of transferring them.

So hanging the bag out the window on the drive home is a bad idea? The dog likes the air so much I thought the fish would too.

Dang, so other than reducing stress, what else can I do to lower the chances?

Just make sure you start with a healthy fish, do drip acclamation, soak food with garlic, and keep your fingers crossed. ;D There is no way to prevent it totally. Just do the best you can and hope for the best.

Edit: Oh ya and QT that way if it does get ich you can treat it.

Maybe put the bag in the dogs mouth, that way they both get some fresh air? Just joking obviously.:)

(the below worded post has been rendered politically correct before posting)

I think that perhaps Tangs reputation for getting ICH is in part due to those of diminished intelligence (it's no longer appropriate to call such people retarded, please don't!) that try to cram tang(s) into very small tanks. This results in the failure of at least the tang if not the entire tank, and usually the first visible symptom is ICH followed by death.
The saying that fish won't outgrow their tank is manifestly bogus. Please buy fish that at their MAXIMUM size will be comfortable in your tank.

Yes you can get Garlic products at your fish store, a lot of people just use the fresh stuff from the store. You add some drops or soak you fish food in it, it helps boost the immune system, which will help them fight off ICK. I use the Kent Marine Garlic.
