In the actual drilling process, other than making sure it's glass that can be drilled I do not believe there is any difference in to process. Obviously how you construct the overflow box itself may be quite different from drilling through the side . . .

can you explain what you mean or BETTER draw a quick sketch of what you are talking about?

"the tube" is no being very specific . . . .are you talking about drilling on the side or bottom now? Are you looking at building a normal overflow? Bean animal overflow?

Wait nm - thinking about it I think you are asking if you drill the bottom and have a standpipe that is covered if that will work.

I would have to say that unless your standpipe is up to the water's surface (or half way out of the water at least) that it may work.

Otherwise the tank will tend to drain down to the level of the standpipe which is why oveflow boxes are used. They help to control the level of water in the tank and isolate the plumbing so that it does not have to be covered with sponges which tend to clog.

The other advantage with overflow box is the great surface skimming that occurs when the top of the water is allowed to cascade into the box and be filtered.

Tank bottoms are almost always tempered even if the front, back and sides are not. You cannot drill tempered glass so you need to find out your tanks construction before attempting to drill or you will end up with a pile of glass fragments.
