I am going to try and plan a snorkeling trip somewhere and want to get some gear. Any one that snorkels or dives recommend a brand to get. Also are there any good places to go in the U.S. or am I going to need to update my passport?

If you're going somewhere out of country (besides mexico) you should definitely consider scuba diving. It doesnt cost much more and i think that you get alot more out of it. Alot of the regular divers that I know always say that once you go scuba diving you wont wanna go snorkeling. But I found some cool spots to snorkel while I was in the Sinai peninsula. I'm still a fan of snorkeling. Just make sure that you snorkel first then scuba if you're gonna do both. It's kinda like watch'n the movie (snorkel) before reading the book (scuba).
The best way to snorkel is with just a few people. It seems like when you're in one of those large groups, you always get stuck with a few girls that scream and squeel at every thing that moves, and there's always a few kids that are kicking and splash all over the place.
I got some pretty cool gear I'll check it out then get back to this thread.

Have not been to the keys myself (my wife has been hounding me about this but buying tanks etc has taken precedence) since I moved to Florida. I have however heard many good things about it.

I do some snorkeling around Venice area and the only advice I have is to go to a reputable dive shop that will properly fit you for your mask and fins..

Also personally the only thing I wish I did have but have not got yet is a snorkeling weight belt. I feel this is essential if you really want to enjoy the fish and reef unless you are just going to float at the top. Most of the snorkeling I have done is off the beach for sharks teeth and shells.

PS.. If anyone is really into scuba diving I know where you can find megalodon teeth. I have seen many divers come out with them.. Amazing to see teeth bigger than your hand and some bigger than my face.

Thats cool that you go to Venice beach. We used to go there as kids and get sharks teeth also.

Along the whole (well alot) of Southern California is good. Plan yourself a trip to San Diego. There's a real safe/popular spot called La Jolla Cove. You can also cross the border for a short drive into Baja. The Sea of Cortez is another good place. Basically not going to see any killer corals. There's Garibaldi, sea bass, kelp bass, pacific halibut (buy a hawaii'n sling), lobster, various cat sharks, barracuda, dolphins, rays, octopus and a few others. I grew up in the area and that was always at the beach fishing or diving.
