I'm fixing to be in the building process and wanted to see what black sand with a black background looked like. I'm still going though all my options. I have bought my tank 90 gal marineland corner flow with black trim. I just need to decide on substrate. I'm going to have a black background. just wanted to see what it looked like with black sand. thanks

I'm pretty sure there's a few on here that have that black/black combo.

Just being honest but I love the look of white/lighter sand for SW tanks, black can look cool if done right but I feel like a lighter substrate makes things pop more and adds a bit more contrast, purely my opinion though. It's most likely because when I imagine the ocean I think of that nice white sand you see in nature films.

Hopefully some will chime in with pics.

I love the looks of black sand, but don't like it so much once detritus collects on the sand. If you have a way of easily cleaning/ preventing the whole salt and pepper look, it looks great. I might go with black sand for my next tank.

I personally like the look of a mixed color, both black n white. You still get that black look without the dirtiness.

actually things pop much more with black sand, which makes sense because it makes everything look very dark therefore making your corals look fantastically colored. you should try it out.

I too was looking into getting black sand and have done a bunch of research. From what I've read, most black sand is magnetic. Not really a problem unless you use a mag cleaner, but just something to be aware of.

I had black sand a long time ago, but not a black background (tank was set up to see 3 sides). It didn't stay black for but a month or so, then it had light colored detritus all over it, so it didn't really make any thing pop at that point LOL. And yes, it's magnetic so it'll scratch the crud outta your tank if you use a magnetic glass cleaner (or get it between the glass & anything you use to clean with).
