Well i have had my tank for 3 weeks now, and today when i go to feed my fish one of my scooter bleenies is dead and the other is about do die. He is barely moving and I can tell. Other than that in my tank i have 2 clown fish, 1 damsel, and 1 medium angel goby? My question is can i leave the bleenies in the bottom for the hermit crabs/ my one main crab to eat or not???

    much help needed please!!!

i thinks its way to early to have a scooter blenny. your pod population prob wasnt large enough for them. they may have starved. and i would remove it from the tank. could lead to an ammonia spike.

Agreed... Scooters need a tank that is mature and filled with 'pods of all sorts. Also two is a tax on many systems... How big is the tank?

Your tank is only three weeks old? SLOW down! Read the articles about cycling a tank. I hate to be a nervous nelly but I would be surprised if any of your fish live.

I had a scooter blenny for 3 weeks or so. I gave him up because my pod population was nowhere near enough......
NOW, only 3 months or so into the hobby, everywhere I look has pods. I found a few pods about 1/4"-1/3" long. They look like things we used to dig up in the beach called sand fleas.....kind of.

I haven't seen pods in my tank for a while...? Are they just a food source or do they have a semi-purpose?

Pods partly eat detritus and gunk in your tank, so they help with that. But their main purpose in SW aquariums is fish food. My wrasse eats ours, and yet we still see them everywhere.

1fast rxtx, what size tank do you have? The TN Aquarium here has a 390 gallon reef, and that tank only has 3 scooter blennies in it. Any smaller tank with two of them is going to be way overtaxed. Also, 3 weeks into it is nowhere near enough time to have that many fish in there. There are two probably reasons your fish died/is dying. One is they starved, which I think is unlikely, because a fish like a scooter blenny doesn't eat just pods. About 1/2 or 3/4 of their diet may be pods, but they can live longer than 3 weeks without those probably. The other reason is, your tank isn't even finished cycling or isn't finished catching up with the bioload your other fish are producing, and the blennies couldn't handle the ammonia/nitrite levels in your system.

More specs on your tank would be great in helping us find the source of the problem. What size tank you have, and ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Also, filtration you have, etc.

they are a food source and they also eat microalgaes. One scooter would have been too much for a tank that is only 3 weeks old.

You might want to try feeding it "Nutrafin Max" Marine Complete Food. it is crucial you get the Marine Complete Food and not Marine Flake Food. The Complete is granualated food and if you hold it underwater and release it, it will sink to the bottom where the blenny can get to it. I've had my "scooter blenny/dragonette" for 13 months now and he loves the stuff : ) Hope this helps
