what is the recommended protein skimmer scfh/lph per aquarium system gallons for a skimmer on light, medium and heavy load tanks?
does 1 lpm/gallon or 2.118 scfh/gallon for a medium bio load sound about right?

    for your info:

    8" tube max 2000 lph
    12" tube max 4000 lph
    18" tube max 6000 lph

scfh to lpm multiply by .47195
    1 scfm=.472lpm

    6" neck length

    6" max 2100 lph
    7" max 2700 lph
    8" max 3500 lph

Ya Guru... you kind of lost me. What is it you are asking? The only part throwing me is your size stuff.

As far as the question how much air per gallon.... damn fine question. Never heard anyone give any sort of a rule of thumb for that. Seems like a no brainer now that you posed it.

I'm running 900 lph on my 90g. That is 10 lph/gallon or .16 lpm/gallon. For general ratings given by manufacturers that is oversized. At a 1 lpm/gallon... holly crap... I need one 10 times bigger.

Can't belive I have never run across any sort of rating given in this manner. Seems there would be a rule of thumb for such a thing. I have read a ton recently though and all I ever see is one company saying their skimmer of X size can handle 500 gallons.... then another company with the same size say it will do good on a 90g. Some sort of standardization would be nice.

    you tell me

thats the problem, there isnt any, its all marketing and opinion. maybe 1 lpm/gal is to much, dont know, but its a good place to start.

    shhh, jeckyll and hyde, lol

skimmers are based off of proteins attaching to the bubbles, bubble size, gph, contact time and so on.

so, how much scfh is needed based off the bio load depending on tank volume and at how many gph taking into consideration the livestock and total system setup?

questions like this make the normal person go, huh?

is that in air or water, 900 lph of air is 31.77 scfh

the Warner Marine K2 is rated for 300 gal light(L), 180 gal heavy(H) which is 5L-9H scfh/gal based off of the bio load. is 9 scfh the norm for a heavy bio? if so why?

I live at 6000ft. I've wondered if the thin air has any impact on skimmer performance. I was curious when I bought my K2 and talked to WM about it. Anyway, I borrowed a air meter to check my old skimmer and new.

Well if you read my write up, you know I had some issues with air draw that was not up to spec. Well that all got straightened out and it's up to spec, but had I not had the air meter, I would have had no clue. And I still would have got on here and proclaimed my skimmer was the best skimmer ever made.;D

But ya.... not many people do check. Wonder what the percentage of sub par performance is with all those fan clubs out there?
