imo, not a good first fish in a tank, start off with a cheap clown or cardinal to see how things go. also they get rather large so a setup of at least 125 gallons would be suggested. they are pretty hardy, about equivelant to the yellow tang. they can be very territorial and you wont want to add another tang afterward. it will get killed.

Don't start with any tang. A clown, wrasse, or cardinal would be a better choice. How large is the tank? As Bvb stated, a large aquarium is needed. I wouldnt set the minimum at 125, though. not all sailfin tangs will grow to be over a foot long. Maybe 90 or 100 at the least. They need a lot of space to swim. Make some room for a sailfin in the water column. And they're aggressive to other tangs.

Tangs are prone to Ich, and Ich is caused by stress. Sailfins are extremely easy to stress out. :( whether its a small tank, bad parameters, or aggressive tank mates, there is near certainty that they will get Ich at one point in time.

Other than that, they're a beautiful fish and a good addition to any large aquarium. Not as aggressive as a damsel, at least. :D

Well he would be the only tang and the tank is 125gal 6foot long just a sweet looking fish. If we assume he will get ich then that means we will need to remove him to treat and then what most QT's are ten gallons or so.

How long has the tank been set up? And what else are you planning on putting in?

Five weeks, Cycle has been what appears to be over for a week and a half testing water today. I can wait have been going slow so we can wait everything is going good so far. Not looking to mess it up. If we go with this fish should we wait till later in the list. What we are looking to get is:

    Tigertail cucumber

    Small school of chromes

    A pair of clowns

A large cuc [small one now]

    A Bleeny

    And lots of corals

Add the clowns first, to give them a chance to mark territory and cycle the tank even more. Then the blenny. I think that you could add the sailfin before the chromis, as chromis are of the damselfish family. IMO that's the best way.

And for a great CUC, check out ReefCleaners. They have CUC kits depending on the size of tank. And if your total is over $50.00, I believe shipping is free. $25.00+ for free shipping to florida residents.
