So I bought a used 65g set up a week ago. Today I'm really inspecting the tank for scratches ect. And I notice that in a lot of spots the silicone is ripped/tore. Some spots all the silicone is gone except the little bit inbetween the glass panels. Now I've siliconed in baffles before for a sump but I've never done a tank.
Should I try and reseal the whole tank?
Or my buddy works for a lfs and he has a brand new 65g reef ready in stock for 250.

I'm leaning towards just buying the new tank only because I'm not sure how good I could get the silicone to look. And of course I don't want water all over my floor. Lol

Safety would dictate getting the neew tank. To seal the tank again requires removing all interior silicone, cleaning the glass with acetone, then applying the silicone in a heavy bead and allowing the the silicone to cure properly which would be something around a week or two.

I would rather re-silicone, but that's just me.

Just use the caulking gun and run a bead of silicone along the inside edges of the tank. Smooth it down with your finger and use tape to get clean edges on your silicone seals.

BTW, old silicone can be scraped up using a clean box knife. Just don't take silicone from b/w the glass panels....only the inside of the tank.

I'd be up for a used 65g if you don't want it. ;)

I thought to reseal a tank u had to completly take the tank apart and redo all silicone. I don't wanna cut corners on the main thing that holds it together.

SH- if I buy the new tank u can have the old 65g. Just gotta drive to detroit lol

You have to remove the silicone from the inside the tank and replace it. You do not need to remove the panels unless they are cracked/broken.

:D I'd have to see how much more it would cost than my 29...I have had it running for almost 3 weeks now, but don't have any thing in there except rock and sand and some crabs. No equipment yet except the skimmer, which I will be getting on Friday.

Scratch that idea...my lights would probably cost twice as much. What are the dimensions of the 65?

Have resealed bigger tanks with the exact process above..

Razor blade to remove silicone from the inside only.
Wash tank with vinegar and water
    Re-silicone
    Allow two days to cure

Wet test in garage for leaks for a day

    Drain and put in place.

I made this same mistake. Fortunately, I caught myself before I actually used the silicone. I'll have to go back to Lowe's.
