So all I have in my fuge is some live rock and a large clump of micro algae. I'm starting to notice some stuff on the rock that looks like it's in need of cleanup. Should I be adding any critters to the mix?

In theory you don't want to add anything to your fuge...It needs to be a safe place or "refuge" away from any predators so that the pods will be able to multiply without being hunted or consumed by predators. I personally throw one of my turbo snails down in my fuge for a day or two once a month for a little clean-up but really you don't want to add anything to a fuge IMO.

the Purpose of a refugium is to grow algae, so as Offensetaken said you do not want any predators. So any clean up crew would be a predator of algae. It is the Algae not the pods that is helping to lower your nutrient levels

I have a misfit hermit crab and a nassarius snail in the fuge, they can't even start to keep up with the algae growth, mostly they are there to eat detritus, and I figure they can keep my amphipods company on lonely nights.

I was thinking a small octopus, just to really freak people out when I open the door to the refugium.

I'd suggest morrish idols and maybe some anemones, a ribbon eel or two would probably be good.

Oh, and chambered nautilus are much cooler than stupid octopus.

    (no, not seriously)
