Good info. It's funny about eventually becoming a mini reef. I dont what that to happen. I might take your suggestion and shut it down. Move the filter to the sump. In fact that's what I did the first go around any ways. The tank was ready with no water, the filter was in my sump for two months. When my fish got sick I use 5 gallon from display and 5 newly mixed gallons. Worked out great.

I have an empty cycled tank for "just in case". But we are actively looking for fish to add. If you don't plan on adding any, take her down and slap the filter on the display as said.

I keep some nass snails in the QT to keep it cycled. They will eat an amazing amount of food!

I have a 33 gallon hospital tank that is running at all times. Regardless of needing it for sick fish or those that are having issues in my main display tank.

If you have added copper at any time regarding your Hippo Tang then you'll need to either change the water and start from scratch or use a filtration product that will clean and polish the water.

Any fish you bring into your home should be quarantined for at least 7-10 days to relax and be watched before being added to your main display tank. Tangs, including Hippos are ick magnets and the least bit of stress will bring it out, as will stress with many fish we buy. We don't know what they've been through before coming to our home tanks.

All that an unused QT needs is a addition of fresh R/O water every few days to replace evaporated water.

    Great question to ask!

Anyone else with an empty running quarantine tank? What do you do to maintain it?
