I have a 20g tank in my shed, with a brand new, but ordinary, flourescent light. I also have an extra Koralia 1 and a heater on hand. Oh, and about 15-20 lbs extra live rock as well.

Am I on my way to an acceptable QT tank, or do I have to drop some cash for a "real" light fixture?

For quarantining fish, you will be fine. Do not use the live rock or sand in your QT though. I would use PVC pipe fittings. Also I would use a basic power filter that you can load carbon into when you do not need to medicate to help out with toxins.

Interesting ... this could be good news for me actually. And I also have an Aquaclear 110 power filter on hand.:)

When you say PVC fittings ... you mean to "furnish" the tank? I can see why that would be good, if that's what you mean. Sterile, and easily kept that way.

Also, since this is going to be such a spartan setup, do I really need the 20 gallon, or will a 10 suffice?

It's just for small fish, and never more than one at a time.

Yes the pvc fittings are just to furnish the tank. It'll provide shelter for the inhabitant(s). I "think" you may be able to use plastic aquarium decor, but pvc works just as well and is a lot cheaper. Porous materials like rocks and sand will absorb any meds you may have to use, so that's why they are not recommended. I use a 10 gallon tank as my QT, but I also only have small fish.
