So I recieved my new canister filter in the mail today to replace my cheap aqueon quietflow power filter. I noticed that my new filter didn't come with my ceramic rings, bioballs, and carbon that it was supposed too. All the filter has are 2 filter pads. One on the top and one on the bottom. What I am worried about is if I take my power filter out to put the canister filter in without the ceramic rings, bioballs, and carbon today. Will this get rid of my bacteria and start causing ammonia and nitrite??? Please help and give me advice on what to do. I want to get my new filter in as soon as possible.

How much rock and sand do you have? How long has the tank been up? There should be enough bacteria in the rock and sand. I dont think those filters keep that much bacteria on them.

Seems odd that your media is missing, ckeck through all of the packaging well? If you need some you might be able to pick it up from a LFS.When setting up the new filter you could add the used media from the old filter,by doing this you won't lose the bacteria it contains and it will help seed any new media you're using.

If you have rock and sand in your tank, they will have the lion's share of bacteria and the rings and balls will equal little more than additional unnecessary maintenance.
