hey guys im michael. well i live in canada and i love anything to do with the sea! as for my fish exp, i have at the moment a freshwater tank. 30gallon with a filstar xp1 canaster filter, which is awesome! for freshwater any ways. and a tropfin bubbler. and thats all i really needed for equipment. as for fish i own 3 black tetras, 1 pleco, 1 flame dwarf gourami, 1 dwarf gourami, 2 opaline gouramis(aggressive little buggers) and last but not least a black ghost knifefish(my fav). and i have a few peaces of drift wood in my tank. the tipical freshwater tank. i have had freshwater tanks sence i was a kid. goldfish and guppies. then mollies and loaches, rainbow fish and freshwater sharks, snakeheads and so on and so forth. and i plan on starting a saltwater tank soon. i hear a little more work, ppl tell me not to hold back haha. so i plan on diving right in, and start with a big tank. and yes i will and i believe is the most important thing to do is to be PASENT.and i have done A LOT of research on saltwater tanks. but i would like to hear what any one here has to say on the matter. so if anyone wants to give me some good pointers about anything tank sizes, filters, skimmers, lights and so on(oh and by the way i want to start with a FOWLR tank). and i hope you guys tell me just how to start! thanks a lot guys and i can't wait to hear some good tips!

Welcome, just some advice when diving in, don't buy cheap, subpar equipment. It may "work" however you just end up spending more money in the long run.

Hi and welcome. I second reading over the 3reef articles and what superclouds said. I'd also recommend reading over Saltwater 101. I've also written some "newbie" articles on my blog. If you like podcasts, ReefCast is awesome.

Much like you I came from freshwater to saltwater. I started my tank about 6-months ago and learned a few things the hard way. Fortunately I found 3reef before I screwed up too much.

I'd recommend starting with at least a 55g, and preferably a 75g. It's not required to go that large, but I think it will give you a better start and they are a little more forgiving of mistakes.

Invest in an RO/DI filter and use only RO/DI water from the start. As you said, be patient and spend lots of time here reading and asking questions.

I love mine, and can't believe I waiting this long to finally start one! Already thinking about getting a bigger tank ::)
