so at first i liked the sound of the rapids in my room when i sleep at night but now that feeling is wearing off and i need some assistance. i have researched the subject and found a post from 2004 that wasnt alot of help or mabey i didnt understand. heres the details. its a 130 gallon tank with dual 1 1/2 inch bulkheads(one in each back corner of tank) i am using 1 1/2 pvc for the overflow plumbing. i have two return lines that are 4 foot long each powered by a ViaAqu 4900 which is rated at 951 gph with 4ft head. so total i have about 1902gph (roughly)going from sump to dt and so on. heres some pics. as you can see in one of them i was attempting the airline tube trick but i dont think the tube was big enough to help. wanted some opinions before i go putting a big whole in my overflow covers

im assuming this was bout the noise and not the flowrate, as people use power heads to get the rest of there flow

yeah your right its just about the noise. the flow rate is great. this is where im confused cause everything i researched looked like the setup in this link but this is for a hob box right. im trying to quiet down my bulkheads. would the same principle work for me to use this setup instead of my bulkhead cover?

i dont see why not thats why i gave you the link lol, the only difference is urs in tank and theres is in the overflow box, both connect to hoses that go to the sump

hopefully you can make it short enough not to overflow the tank.

believe me you guidance is much appreciated. ive been doing alot of research and found alot of people with the same exact problem. my bulkheads are drilled from the back of the tank four inches from the top of water surface not leaving enough room unless i could modify the piece or mabey rotate the bulkhead cover ( which is how i adjust the water level in the dt) but my question is do i take the bulkead cover off and replace it with the gurgle buster. ( by bulkhead cover i mean the slotted piece coming out of my bulkhead that keeps fish or other objects out but allows water to travel thru.

    k+ for your assistance

I have to ask... why did you drill the holes for the return at the water line??? They should be on the bottom glass or at least at the bottom of the side glass for a good OF.

You might try putting a Street L on there with a hole drilled in the top of it for air and see if that will quiet it down.

very good question otty. my best friends dad sold me the tank, stand, canopy, and 2 nice protein skimmers for 400$. did all the plumbing and has helped with every step of this process, got me a hookup with all the lfs, and gave me some frags. I couldnt really pass it up. and i wouldnt have known any better because as of january i was (am) a complete noob.

You might add a "tee" where the first 90 is going down to the sump. you can add a small length of pipe with a cap and in that cap drill a hole for an air inlet, but I believe that the hole should be above the water line. I'm dealing with the noise issue also right now but I have a hang on type overflow box and I just did a type of durso stand-pipe for mine. keep us updated.
