I'm new to saltwater and just set-up my 20g Nano Reef today. I have a 10g sump below it with a Gen-X 2400 Pump (about 650gph) on the return line. I was given an overflow box, and man what a chore that was. I was having trouble getting the flow on the pump to match the flow on the box. Anyhow, I finally got it working, but i had to drop the box on the inside to a level where the teeth are below the surface. Basically I feel like the overflow box is TOO large, or too much flow whatever. And the noise, with the burping and gurgling into the sump, well, I won't continue to have a tank like this, that's for sure!

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? The drain line from the overflow box is 1". I know I could probably shorten the return line about a foot, but would that be enough?

    Help:confused:

Just get a ball valve and trim back the flow from the return pump a bit.

Forgot to mention I have ribbed vinyl tubing rather than hard PVC on the drain line

650 gph is alot for a 20g tank..

my 55g with 10g sump uses 350gph mag 3 pump and 1" overflow box..

teeth on overflow box are about 1/4"to1/2" below water line.. as for the noise you get used to it.. just think back when you were a kid and put a conch shell up to your ear to hear the ocean.. or when your toilet doesnt stop running! :)

you should be able to get a valve for vinyl tubing at home depot/lowes for a couple bucks. the setup below is what i have(the return half anyway) and it helps give good control over return rate to tank. all you need is another foot of tubing, a valve and a T. the more open the valve is the less return goes to tank

The pump has a dial to lower the rate of flow on it. I got it so I can lower flow for now (if needed) and have the muscle for an upgrade in the future.

The problem isn't with the return line, its with the drain line from the overflow box. It's actually flowing too fast, faster than the pump can push...

What about a pre-filter? Or maybe a coupling or something? Ideas?

    Thanks for all the help:);D

your overflow cant flow to fast.

its your pump which controls the flow rate

slow down your muscle car v8 you call a return pump!

bring her down to around 300gph (50 % power) try that.. adjust after that
