I picked up an older 100G the other day. I noticed that there is no Tempered stamps anywhere on the tank. It hold water quite well. The old owner said that it might be from the 70's (not sure if he was joking or not). He was in his late 20's so I am not sure. From what I can tell it has been half azzed siliconed over again. Looks like there wasn't a center brace originally. He did, however, make a brace with 1/2" glass and siliconed it in.

My question is if this is a safe setup? It measures 60"x16"x25". I plan on stripping the old silicone and reapplying again. I would really like to tackle drilling a sump overflow on the back panel but knowing its an older tank akes me uneasy about doing much to it... It does have real wood trim alone the top edge all the way around.

First things first – you need to identify is this is tempered or not. You can not drill the overflow you spoke of if the glass is tempered.

Put on a pair of polarizes shades and look at the tank in sunlight – if you see some rainbow coloring, its tempered and you will need to use a box overflow.

The brace be made is rather useless in my opinion.

Is it safe? Sure, why wouldn’t it be – its still a fish tank that was designed for what you have in mind. Clean up the silicone as you suggested test for leaks and you should be good to go.

any more inputs? I looked at tempered glass on my car today with my polarized glasses. I didn't see any rainbow colors.

bump.... after going thru a few visual tests I am pretty sure that all the glass in my 100G is NOT tempered because of the 3/8" thick glass all around and because it is pretty old.
