Newbie with first question.

Hello all. I am new to the site and new to the hobby. I have listed essentially what I have so far and my tank has been cycling for about a week. (without light) I will be picking up lighting tomorrow.

My first question is concerning live rock. I purchased live rock from my lfs. two diffrent color types came from there live rock tank. one with colors (purples, greens and reds) and others where mainly tanish whitsih in color.

I was told the less colorful rocks came streaight from the ocean while the colorful ones came from reef tanks.

Am I getting ripped? because from what I have read the more color the better. Thanks for info.

 

while more color may look better, it is not always true that it is better. was the LR cured when you bought it? the coralline growth you like will happen once your tank gets up and running. Heck, i started out with 100 lbs of white base rock. IMO you did not get ripped, but we can only tell if you get some pics up

 

The term "live rock" simply means rock with beneficial bacteria living in and on it.The colorful coraline algae is a plus if you like it and should spread throughout your tank given the right conditions.Maintaining the right calcium,magnesium,and alkilinity levels will help with this and is also important if you add corals.No need to feel overwhelmed by this as most good salt mixes will give you levels that are at least in the ballpark.If you like the size,shape, and overall look of the rocks you bought and they allow you to aquascape to your liking then no,you didn't get ripped.Almost forgot ....WELCOME TO 3REEF!!
