I am in the process of setting up my 150 gallon tank, and have run into a problem. I bought some Meridian Aquarium Substrate and rinsed it with about 4 gallons of water per bag. This apparently was nowhere close to being enough water. The tank is so cloudy that the visibility is about an inch. Can any one recommend a good device for polishing the water. I added the sand on Friday and I've seen no improvement at all. Here are two options I come up with:

    1. http://www.petsolutions.com/HOT-Magnum-Canister-Filter+I47490134+C20.aspx
    or

2.http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Carbon-and-Phosphate-Remover-GFO-Media-Bags-&-Reactors/c109_85/p678/BRS-Single--GFO-and-Carbon-Reactor/product_info.html but use a sediment filter 1 or 5 micron instead of the GFO chamber

    Any thoughts on either one?

    Thanks

I'm not familiar with either one of those. I set up a new tank this weekend and didn't have a problem with the sand, but I added carbon to a filter sock in my sump and didn't rinse it well and my water turned black. I have a canister filter from a previous setup and ran that and within a few hours the water was pretty clear and this morning it is completely clear. On my previous tank I had a sand storm when I set it up and had the canister on it and it cleared up pretty quickly.

I had a canister with the micron filter in it but it has since been retired (broke). It worked well but, it did not last long.

I never rinse my sand since its the fines that make a good deep sand bed.
I do have an old Aquarium Systems System 1 diatom filter but rarely use it. Seed the sand with a few cups of live sand from friends tanks and the bacteria will take off like crazy. Once the bacteria coats the sand it will drop like a rock.

I guess I could add some sand from one of my other tanks and see what happens. This dust storm just does not seem to want to quit.

Yeah, adding some live sand from a friends tank would be the best bet. Give it a couple days with that and I bet you will be happy with the results.
