I might be getting a 308 gallon tank from my other house soon for a reef tank. I want to know where is the cheapest place to get live rock from and high quality. I live in miami, florida. I've seen that key largo has a live rock store. And want to know if you think they are safe to purchase from. They harvest their own live rock. Directly 5 or 6 miles off coast from their backyard.
    Thank You

Check out craigslist and send an e-mail to anyone with a large tank setup for sale asking if they will sell you just the rock. I got all the rock in my 125 + 60 pounds I diddn't use for $100. I browse the south florida CL often and have been very tempted to make the 4 hour trip for some of the deals I have seen.

Florida rock is really dense. Fiji in in the middle and Tonga is the lightest I have come across. Thus, you will have to see what kind of deals you can get on all three in your area. Apples to oranges my friend. $5.99/lb for Tonga is probably better than $3.99/lb for Florida base rock.

I would buy a bunch of dry rock, just shop around on that.. Or ask the LFS if you can get a deal if you prepay and buy and entire 50# box of base rock.. Ask to do the same with the remaining liverock that you wish to add. I will bet they will go for it.

I would agree that Floridian seems to be awfully dense and typically has various hitchhikers...

    I would look into Pohnpei..

I also think florida rock is too dense. I second the dry rock. I would go 1/10th live rock and the rest dry base rock. This will cut down on your chances to get hitch hikers and it will be cheaper.

+1 on the base rock. Cheap is awesome

On the other hand, with a tank that large, I would want a few showpiece size rocks. I would call around. In FL, there has got to be someone with some nice live showpieces that you can hand pick.
