You don't need to cycle with live fish.
Just use raw shrimp and let it rot in the tank.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
There is no advantage to cycling with live fish, and most certainly a disadvantage to the fish. Save your money and a fish and use raw shrimp IMHO.

Yes, just raw table shrimp. It will rot and provide an ammonia source.

Was about to do the same. LOL

As the others have explained, you're only hurting the fish when you cycle with them. Raw table shrimp in a cutout of a pair of pantyhose (for ease to remove after it decomposes a bit).

Check out my build thread, I have pics of the shrimp I used on the first page. :)

thanks guys, my rocks i have are probably dead since its been sitting in bucket of cold salt water with no flow for 2 weeks. Do I have to buy live rocks? or can I just buy like 1 piece of live rock and seed the rest of the dead sand and dead rock

You can def. seed the tank. Use around 5 pounds of live rock, and the rest base rock. The cycle will probably take a little longer, but it is a much cheaper option ;)

Just to clear it up, a smaller amount of LR will have a shorter cycle, rather than a longer one...meaning your friends should be able to move in sooner(theoretically). You will still need to test water params to be sure.

You will just have to wait a bit longer to see the large amount of coraline growth. :)
