take the rock out and shake it around in a bucket full of ro/di and he will fall out and into the bucket.. be ready to grab him out of the water fast and into another saltwater tank..

I heard that if you put the rock in freshwater, it should try and flee out of the rock because of the shock of the salinity change. It depends if you're comfortable using this method, I don't know what would ultimately happen to the mantis, and if you're up for getting rock out of the tank. It also won't be great for other things living on the rock.

Edit: Apologies Bama, same post time!

That I'm unsure on - how large/established is the rock? I don't know how much die off you'd get from using that method, perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge could help you out.

Since you know what rock it is in, I assume you know what hole it is in? I wouldn't dunk the whole rock. What I did was pull the rock and I held it over a bucket with some saltwater in it and I poured just a little club soda only in his hole. He jumped out and into the bucket in like 2 seconds. I put the rock back in and had no problems because it was only in the air for maybe 20 seconds total. I have the mantis in my sump waiting for his buddy that I can't find, then they will both go to the LFS where I am hoping to trade for something I want.
