Recently re-aquascaped a corner of my tank to help out some corals for spacing, and the end result I need to lose a piece of live rock that had some mushrooms on it. The rocks to big to put anywhere else in the tank and currently put it in my sump. I have a regular daylight lightbulb down their to help the refugium, can I keep that rock in the sump or will the mushrooms die and harm the tank system. Next alternative would be a giveaway to lfs.

you could remove it from the rock but I would say it would need the light from the main tank vs your sump light

I am one to bet the shrooms will be ok, they will turn brown but should stay alive just fine and not hurt the tank.

Even if the daylight bulb is just a cheap 6500K spiral fluorescent, it should be more than enough light for mushroom corals.

Agreed...we have all kinds of low light "volunteer" corals including mushrooms in our sumps...and there is no light except the light spillage from the tanks above.

if you do not want the rock with the shrooms on, then seeing if you can trade it for something you do want with the LFS is a good idea IMO

keeping it in the sump, would mean you do not get the viewing pleasure from having it, that you got when you purchased it for your DT, in which case keeping it, for keeping it sake seems pointless to me

how much rock will be left, should you remove this rock from your system?
because some of your bacterial/ biological filtration capacity, lives on that rock at present, so moving to much rock out at any given time could have negative consequences on your water quality
the bacteria colonising other surfaces will increase to compensate, within a short time of removing that 1 piece of rock ( naturally the amount of time depends on what percentage of your total real estate that rock equates to

but if as I suspect that 1 piece of rock equates to a small percentage of your total rock/ real estate , then removing it, will not have any negative effect on your water quality

If you want to save the mushrooms, why don't you frag them? Instead of giving the rock to the LFS, why don't you see if there are local reefers that might be willing to make a trade with you?
