Hi everyone. I'm in the process of setting up my first salt water tank. The tank has been running for almost 4 weeks now.
The tank is a 90 gallon with about 85 lb of live rock.
I purchased two different kinds of live rock, about 65 lb is fiji rock, and the rest is this purple aqua-farmed rock. When I got the fiji rock, it was mostly green.
Per some information I had read on cycling, for the first two weeks, I left the lights off all of the time. Then I started putting the lights on for about one to two hours a day for the next week (mostly because I was looking at the tank). During that week I had a outbreak of brown all over my sand bed and rocks. (diatoms?). That has since resolved.
Then I noticed during my last water change that most of the green of the fiji rocks was turning white. I'm worried that it has died off because I left the lights off too much? Am I assuming incorrectly that it is die-off? I've started leaving the lights on for about 10 hours a day for the last few days.
The purple rocks have a lot of red on them now, especially on the areas that were white when I bought them.
Upon the advice of a local LFS I'd been adding Purple Up to the tank regularly.
So, did I mess up and ruin the fiji rock? Will the green come back?

    Thanks everyone!

Don't worry about the green, its probably some type of coralline that bleached. It won't hurt any thing and will probably come back nice and purple. Does the red on the other rocks look like coralline algae or is it kinda powdery and nasty looking?

lol post a pic :) that always helps. It is more than likely die off from the tank and is colpleatly normal. it will come back and then some as your tank matures and grows and the greens will come and go alonge with a few other colors.

I would test your water for NItrates, Nitrites, PH, Salinity, and post your finding on the sight to get another opinion but it sounds normal to me.

Sorry it's not the greatest picture, but this is what the purple rock looks like now. I'm not sure it's coralline on it.

This is the largest pice of the other rock. All of these rocks are doing the same. You can still see a little of the green on this one, but nearly all of the white was green.

the brown alge should go away after it get finished cycling if it hasnt already which means you need a clean up crew to help which is perfectly normal in everyones aquarium. LOVE the purple color though :)
