I have a 29G BioCube thats been up for about 8 months, over the past few months I have been getting this deep red algae that comes and goes on the rock and sandbed. Over the past few days I noticed that the algae literally develops on the sandbed after the lights come on and then disappears after the lights go out.
Because of the deep red almost purplish color I never thought it was diatoms, and now that I have figured out that it comes and goes with the light, I am baffled.
I have been buying RO water from a pet store, but today I will be doing my first water change with RO/DI water from my own system that I just got for xmas. I also just added a protein skimmer and I am religious with water changes every two weeks.
Here are some levels, Calcium is close to 500ppm, KH almost 200ppm, Phosphates are 0, and Nitrate is about 10 (been around 10 since I started the tank)

Here are some pics, any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Its cyano bacteria.

Edit: make sure the first 5 or so gallons you make get dumped away.

I had similar outbreaks, not enough flow. I bought 2x Koralia evo 750 and now all my cyano gone for good. I keep my lights on 14-16 hrs.

If you exhaust all things and find nothing works red alone remover works but is a pain in the butt. My skimmer refused to work right for a week plus. I know most people are against adding things like this to aquariums but the option is there and it does work but I would use it as a last resort.
