    Hey all,

I think my heater is starting to kick the bucket...its a 300 watt hydor theo, had it for about 2 1/2 years now, it wasn't the greatest right out of the box, set temp on the dial was about 5 degrees off or more. Now I noticed that the temp is really fluctuating a lot, when I got up this morning it was down to around 75 degrees(usually keep it at 78-79) and a little later was back up to 79 degrees and still climbing. So, with all the money I have invested in the tank I don't want this to happen again, so I was thinking of getting JBJ's Microprocessor heater which is around $130. Was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these, or anyother suggestions?

    Thanks!

Personally I have never had a good experience with anything of their products. Probably your best bet is to just buy a Jager. There are a few others brands that are okay, but for some reason heaters seem to be a high failure item, this is one area it isn't just JBJ unfortunately. Finnex is another one that gets good reviews, although, I had one fail a few months back. I ended up going back to Jager even though I don't like glass heaters, the seem to be the most reliable.

I had a Jager and it went on me randomly one night... not really impressed after less then a year of needing it to simply raise the temp around 4 degrees...

I have the new aqueon heaters in both of my tanks and they work very well. I would suggest getting 2 smaller heaters then one huge one. That way they can work in unison to keep the thing warm and if one kicks the bucket you still have some heat being generated. Good luck!

i had the jbj mine went bad at 6 months, temp was all over the place. i believe its what caused my xenia crash and other corals to die. your best bet is a jager heater with a apex controller backing it up .

these heater controllers that are meant for just the heater i would not trust, since they run the heating wand. if you get one get a separate heater with its own thermostat and plug that into the heater controller. this gives you 2 thermostats that need to fail, which gives you a fail safe.

I use a ViaAqua titanium heater, which is complete crap, but it is controlled with dual temp probes from a Digital Aquatics reefkeeper. Never had the tank temp be more than + or - .1 degree in 9 months of running this set up.

I would highly recommend any titanium heater over any glass one, and brand wise, it would definitely be Finnex.
