Internal vs external

    What are the pros and cons of running pumps internal vs. External. ???? Thanks

    External pumps, have the benefit of much of the heat not being added to your water

    therefore in a warm climate where temperature could be an issue, external mounted pumps are a better option IMO

    Internal pumps - the biggest benefit I can think of is that if it leaks, then it leaks into the sump, rather than into the cabinet

    Internal is cheaper to buy, but less efficient to run. Also heats up the tank considerably, but this may not be a con depending upon your geographical location.

    External is more expensive, but more efficient to operate. Can be easier to service as well, depending upon your sump arrangement. These are generally much quieter as well.

    I think you will find most internal pumps ar more effcient than external pumps since they do not have to turn a fan. Gallon for gallon they are almost always cheaper to operate. External pumps also are louder sine they are not submerged in liquid and many have an external cooling fan which blows over the motor.

    Most affordable pumps, external or internal add about the same amount of heat to the water being pumped since heat transfers through the shaft or magnets even on a external and internal pumps or those which can be either/or have internal passages inside the pump which use product or tank water to cool the pump regardless if its in the sump or outside the water.

    When you start to get into the higher head or higher capacity(flow) pumps you will find some that are more cost effective but in the 1000 GPH range, or a little higher, pumps like Eheims, Ocean Runners, Mags, Quiet Ones, Rio Hyper Flo and others are hard to beat when you calculate the watts per gallon pumped.

    It will heat the water the same internally or externally since it has internal water jackets or passages inside the motor.

    External requires you have the room outside the sump.The biggest sell for me was the price.

    Not true. With an internal pump ALL heat generated by the pump is being transmitted to the water. With an external pump much is being transmitted to the air.

    External Pump Benefits:

    - Doesn't heat the water nearly as much.
    - Easier to get higher flow and higher head capabilities
    - Doesn't take up room in sump
    - Less efficient (if you're pumping to higher head, you eat more power)


    Internal Pump Benefits:

    - Easier to plumb in
    - Less likely to leak
    - Less expensive
    - Doesn't take up room out of sump

    Comparison of two 1200 gph pumps:

    MagDrive 12:
    - 110 watts
    - 1200 gph at 0 head
    - 600 gph at 10' head

    Iwaki 40 RXT
    - 210 watts
    - 1200 gph at 0 head
    - 780 gph at 10' head
