I've been told that the hermit crab will take care of the dark red algae on my coral. Is this true ? I have tested my water & it is fine. I also have plenty of circulation.

    Hi SaltyFresh
Dont think Hermits eat enough to make a difference, they will pick things of the rocks but its normally the soft stuff rather than hard coralline algae they eat

i think he means cyano bacteria since there on corals, and i have the same answer they wont eat enough to really make a difference, the best way to get rid of it is figure out where the excess nutrients that feed the algae are coming from and remove it

I put 1 teaspoon of Marinvit & 2 teaspoons of calcium in my nano tank every 2nd week. Is that too much ?

only your test kit can answer that question for the calcium.

you dont need marinvit if you do water changes, as strontium isnt that important and trace elements get replaced enough in water change.

its more of a feeding issue or nutrient export issue. so look at those

Thanks. I will stop the marinvit. Too bad I had not know this before. I just put it in this morning. I do my water change on Saturday. Perhaps I should do it today. Is there any kind of vertibrate/ invertibrate that would help ?

    Thanks for your help.

    Dark Red Algae on Coral

I have a nano tank. On some of the live rock, I have a dark red algae. I know the pink is ok, but I have heard the red is not. The trouble is, the red rock is inaccessible unless I tear apart the whole tank. I do have 10 snails, 1 emerald crab & a shrimp. Will any of these feed upon this algae ? Thanks.

Is it slimy or hard. Sounds like it could be cyano. Pic would help.

If it rubs off with your finger its Cyano Bacteria and you have a problem. If it doesnt rub off its corraline.

Cyano can be sucked out with a turkey baster or a pipette.

if it is cyano, you don't have enough flow in that area.
