Try to aim the fluval output at the surface to create even more agitation for aeration. Also, a refugium growing macro algae will also assist you by uptaking Co2 and creating oxygen. But, do you happen to know your PH and alkalinity? If they are both good, then carbonic acid probably isn't the problem in your tank.. I peronally used a Fluval for years and never had any issues.. Now I run my tank filterless.. ;D

The oxygen and water movement will help. (you might want to add a second powerhead and point in opposite direction in tank to get some variety to the water movement in the tank)... but if you roll with just one powerhead... make sure it's on the opposite end of the tank from your return hose from the fluval (in other words... pointing towards your intake to the fluval). That way you're pushing water towards the filter.

The main thing is getting the water to work it's way to the top of the tank where the gas exchange can happen. so air bubbles and the powerhead should really help. Then keep checking Nitrate like crazy because as mentioned earlier... the closed systems can turn into nitrate factories in a hurry.

Have you checked out the price on wet/dry's? They are a lot less expensive than I thought they were when I started looking into it. The wet dry I purchased for my 75 gallon tank was less than the fluval. When you do change filters.... start the wet/dry running and leave the fluval attached and running for two weeks... that way you transfer the bacteria to the new filter and allow the population to grow before you remove the old filter.

I know it sucks to learn this way... I killed off like 5 fairly expensive fish with this same issue... but since I switched to the new filter and more water movement... my fish are doing GREAT... and now I am onto fighting algea and trying to make corals thrive. ($$$$$$$$$)

marine fish need alot more water movement than freshwater.

i noticed you are using tap water, do u use dechlorinator with it??

it may be something like a parasite or bacteria in the water

i would also reccomend some live rock
