is it safe to pull off a water change of 50-60%?

Yes, although usually 20% each week will also work well until get more the way you want them.

    Awesome, Thanks!;D

I have noticed a good build up on certain areas of my reef with less flow. It's a browning dust almost, similar to what builds up in the sump. does this have anything to do with my numbers?

Yes, the algae is feeding on the phosphates. Manually remove it and get the po4 down and it should subside.

Glad you've taken quite an interest in reefing. It really is fun. Welcome to 3reef and hopefully with the water changes you can get those numbers down.

It really is, I have always enjoyed taking care of the tank but now that I am fully responsible and have seen what others have done I'm in for the long run, the possibilities are endless I have never been so intrigued to learn so much about something.;D

And thank you guys for the awesome welcome to 3Reef. I will give the rocks an intense cleaning now, hit it with phozdown and report soon!!!.

    Thanks again.

I don't know if it's a sign of good luck but I'll take it, just went to clean the tank and one of my GR Chromis was attacking the magnet cleaner and upon closer inspection I saw eggs stuck to the glass. what do I do? will they be eaten?

Welcome to 3reef. At least from what I saw, your numbers aren't bad and your tank looks pretty good!

the eggs are clear it seems but held on by white substance.

Thanks!, they are not insanely bad but I have seen no growth in my tank over the last 2 years, just countless losses.

I'm sorry to hear about the losses. I realize they're not where they should be but should be able to be remedied in a reasonable amount of time. I would agree to perhaps get a little more aggressive with water changes, 20% every week at least and maybe start with a 30-40%. I realize that's a lot with a tank that large. Do you run something to lower phosphates, such as phosguard or GFO? It looks like you have a lot of chaeto in your sump which is a good thing (at least that's what it looks like) and your skimmer looks to be pulling out a good head of junk....you maybe could pull some of that out (if I'm correct in that's what in there) to let it tumble a little more to help pull out some phosphates and excess nutrients....it's probably just going to be increasing the husbandry and being consistent with it that will bring your levels into line and to help the tank clear up.
