I just got a red Trachyphylia brain and it was fine for about 2 days, will polyps out when the lights were on and everything looking fine. Yesterday the polyps were not out and it was just a bowlish shaped rock with the coloring of the coral. I know the polyps are still there, but im not sure whats causing the discomfort. The bowlish shape that is formed when the polyps are not extended gets filled up with sand over the course of the day by my sleeper goby. Could this be causing the unhappiness? Does anyone have experience with sand sifting gobies and open brain coral?

I try to keep mine in just enough flow to blow off any sand or detris material
also mine will close up and look like a "bowlish shaped rock" for a time and then look great it seems like a never ending cycle with it. had mine around 1yr now

I was just looking and the tree leather I have been fighting for a while to get polyp extension on and to get the coral to extend looks like it lost a branch. My kenya trees, toadstools, zoanthids, and mushrooms corals are all fine.

I just realized why I was having trouble with my Trychyphylia. My Brain coral was only about 5 or 6 inches from a Kenya Tree frag. I moved the KT away from the Brain last night and it is fully out and fine today. I also added a Favia Brain coral, a small bubble coral, and a small piece of Pink Hammer Coral that are all doing very well. The LFS employee said the bubble was a very low light coral and would get fried high up in the tank. True or false?

What kind of lighting do you have?
I would be more concerned about having too much water flow for the bubble(Plerogyra) than light intensity. Tissue being torn from its calcareous skeleton is often the problem that aquarists face with this type of coral!

Also, be careful in the placement of your corals as Bubble have strong and long sweeper tentacles that can reach and sting neighboring corals! Hammers possess a strong sting as well and can actually give you a nasty rash as well!
