OK yesterday I bought my son a Brain. Its a Closed or Maze will post pics asap. My question is whats the best way to feed and what to feed. Have read micro plankton and brine shrimp. I don't have moon lights yet. So I was wondering after the lights go out how long before he will stick his tentacles out if he does or will it take him a couple days to settle in. As always Thanks.

Mysis shrimp is a better choice, any meaty sea food, brine does not have much nutritional value.

It will eat during the day if you give it time to extend it's tentacles.

Best way IMO is to, cut a clear liter bottle (coke, pepsi) in half, place over the brain, put a small amount of food in the container, allow the coral to show a feeding reponse and add more food once it's open.

As it gets larger and used to target feedings it will show a quicker feeding response.

So Corailline how do you stop the bottle from falling over or do you just hold it. I know dumb ? but I like to do things right. How about cycopeezzee or stuff like that. Thanks

You may notice he will extend his tentacles during the day when you feed the tank, but in the evening is the most common time that he will extend for you. I target feed with a specially designed tube – but what Corailline described above is a perfect suggestion (plastic bottle)…..

Cyclops may work, but meatier is better IMO. Rod's frozen is an excellent choice.

If the flow is too strong you may be able to turn off a power head. The edges of the cut container can be pressed down into the substrate.

You can also just target feed it routinely and it will probably get enough food as long as you are feeding when you see tentacles out.

But to get the best bang for your buck and the least amount of waste I like the bottle method, plus it prevents crabs and shrimp from stealing the food, until the brain has had enough time to gets it's share.

if you cut the bottom of the bottle off, and put it cut-side down, spout side up - it will be totally stable - with a small opening so it's easy to put food in - but it will not get blown away.

I think I am gonna have to try this one!!!

I usually feed my brain with knowledge from books and beer!!!

Oh wait!! You mean the CORAL brain!?!? j/k

I try to feed my brain 1X per week - I am sure others will say to feed more - but I do not stay up late enough during the week to feed at night. By the time the lights are off I am already in bed. I may have to change that tho.

I just started feeding Oyster Eggs/Oyster Ova particles and Arctipods from Reef Nutrition - almost overnight saw an increase in health in all my corals that it was fed to.

Kinda pricey - but may be worth the extra money IMO.

Others will weigh in on feeding frequency.

Two things I would say about feeding corals:

They typically extend their feeder polyps/tentacles after dark (at least 20-30 min after lights out). This is one of the better times to feed as the physiological response I have seen from some corals indicates nighttime feeding is good. That is not to say that feeding cannot occur during the day - but I find that feeding at night also has the added bonus of not having to worry about anything but the coral (not fish or inverts) getting the target feeding.

Also, I leave the pumps off for 10 min before feeding to allow the water to become as still as possible. And I leave the pumps off for a full hour before powering back up to give the corals plenty of time to feed.

As always thanks. I am ordering three sets of current moon lights will this effect the feeding process or would this be considered night time. Looks to me that me and my brain will be spending some quality time together.
