I am new to this forum as well as completely new to the salt water tank experience. and from the research i have gathered it sounds like i need a sump, return pump, live rock, protein skimmer, refugium along with all the given, substrate heater etc. so the question is, what is the bare minimum needed to have a successful fish only tank, if it helps i have an 110 gallon tank with a drop box built in.

Bare minimum for a fo imo would be a ro/di , refractometer , heater , sump or wet/dry , maybe a power head or two for circulation.
Base rock and skimmer optional but reccomended.

The more rock the better your biological filter.A skimmer isn't necessary while cycling the tank but would help alot after you have added livestock, especially if you want large fish or a larger number of fish(large bioload).
