I'm fixing to get a 46 bow. 4 or 5 years old. Are the bottoms AND sides going to be tempered? Or could I drill the back side for installation of a bulkhead?

It's best to contact the manufacturer to be sure. Don't start drilling unless you are sure.

The tank is a 46 bow "All Glass" aquarium. I can't seem to find specs on it besides size and what not. I know the bottom is indeed tempered. But could i still drilled the back for the overflow?

Heard this from a local reef club.

Put on a pair of polarized sunglasses... put an LCD screen in the tank with a blank white page (he used his iphone)... look at the lcd screen through the glass with sunglasses on.. if you see swirly patterns etc... tempered... if its clear glass... not tempered.

Im trying this method and im not seeing any swirlies or anything in glass clearly marked tempered (my screen door)
I know the glasses are polarized for sure 100%. and I used an iphone. im going to try my laptop screen next.

Revo 3050 sunglasses, I double checked the mfr website they only sell polarized glasses.

That's interesting. I wear polarized sunglasses; and know from experience, when I see a pricey car's rear window, I see spots in it--like a Mercedes or BMW. I never knew what it meant, but maybe I know now that it means their glass is tempered? It's not a swirly pattern, but it's a very organized array of dots. It almost seems as if I'm seeing a molecular structure. I can't be the only one to have seen this, so if anyone knows what I'm talking about, chime in, and give your opinion if it relates to this thread. :)

And about the original question, I'd bet it's probably safe to drill any surface other than the bottom. Not many tanks are made with tempered sides and back. Some are, but most definitely not.
