Do your research first. If you cannot be 100% sure that the tank is not Tempered then dont drill it unless you are willing to buy a new tank. Tempered glass cannot be drilled. Otherwise, when done properly drilled vs. overflow is a matter of preference. A drilled tank looks a bit cleaner but when done properly either design can be made to minimize the chances of a water spill. I run a drilled tank and an overflow tank. Both function just fine but the overflow does have the pipes coming out the top of the tank.

Also, consider that having a tank drilled at a lfs will cost you just about the same as buying an overflow. Drilling the tank yourself isn't that difficult just make sure you get good advice on location to drill the holes (another reason to have a lfs drill for you).

I remember not being able to tell glass and acrylic apart too. No worries.

Acrylic tends to be one piece for all 4 sides. Glass has edges and you can see the 'side' of the glass at the corners.

I would trade it out Wayne if you can you will be alot happier. Depending on the price of the old tank it may be worth a shot drilling and finding out if it is tempered.. you have a 50/ 50 chance. but if you know someone that will trade with you that will be the best way. drilling glass is extremely easy if you take your time but having a LFS do it is alot easier but as most all :LFS they probably will not guarantee not breaking it them selfs.

Drilling your tank is easy. Takes about 5 min. each hole. I decided to drill because a reef ready tanks overflow takes up so much tank space.
Bama and I both did the glass holes kit. Love it!

What size tank do you have?
I have a 90g tank with 2 - 1.5" holes. Probably to much flow but I use ball valves to regulate flow.
Under 90g I think on hole would be just fine.

Then I would consider 4 hole 2 on each end or 3 holes 2 and 1. What kind of sump are you doing?
I have. Skimmer area- bubble trap, return area middle, Fuge area overflowing into return.
I have one line going to my Skimmer and the other to my fuge with the flow cut way down.
You could run 2 lines to your skimmer and one to your fuge. That would be nice..
