    There is the best link.

If you are building a 125 - I understand the build will be expensive and you want to save money where you can. The overflow box is not a good spot to save money on a tank of this size.

After you spend you time and money researching, building and designing and Overflow out of white PVC pipe - you are going to realize that you have no security, it does not flow "1000GPM" like others may claim, and you have no way of telling if your siphon is about to be broken behind the white PVC pipe. Also, DIY pvc overflows tend to lack greatly aesthetically.

After you take all of that into account - the $100 or so dollars for a professionally built, reputed design is TOTALLY worth it.

You can not put a price on peace of mind - and you cannot put peace of mind on a DIY overflow for a big tank IMHO.

If youbare willing to drill the glass yourself...look up the bean animal overflow. It is a very popular overflow design - used in many tanks of all sizes. It has 2 main overflow lines with even an emergency line. 1" PVC has a flow rate(by gravity) of about 600GPH. So you could potentially have 1200gph going through your tank. But you really only need about 5X turnover to get good filtration. It does not need to be 10+ times an hour...
