Has anyone every tried distilling water rather than using an RO to make it....a while back i built a DIY still to make some kind of alcohol. I never used it and i still have most the pieces would this work for distilling water as well? or is an RO more effective?

Hmm interesting question.. I distilled ethanol in organic lab. I wonder which is cheaper. Distilling seems more time consuming though..

id probably say distilling is cheaper, less waste and 0 replacements but yes probably more time consuming

The energy required to distill water is tremendous and not cost effective at all. The cost to produce RO/DI is less than a nickle a gallon on average.

Distilled water can also still contain volatile organic chemicals which travel with the steam and then get condensed back in with the treated water. Good RO/DI is ultrapure or 18.2 megaohms resistivity.

Most the times the stills are made of coppers and steals. Will leach in the water. Just get your self a quality RO unit.

Then set up your still for what you intended ;)

NO. Most distillation units today are glass or epoxy lines exotic metals like high grade stainless and titanium, copper is a thing of the distant past. Even at that the cost of distillation is very expensive. Look up the definition of BTU and Therm on the internet and you will see how much power or BTUs it takes to raise the temperature of one gallon of water one degree then add that up to 212 degrees and its prohibitive.

Bruno, I didn't get the PM from you, try again.
