from what i understand you leave them in there the whole time. i did mine with live rock and live sand though so im no expert.

Shrimp is not necessary, basically its a mixed emotion when it comes to adding shrimp. Basically you will need live rock and live sand which will help cycle your tanks for needed bacteria etc. I am no expert just from personal experience. One main thing is "PATIENCE" without it you will not survive the cycling process. I barely got back into this about a month ago when I started up my 30 gallon. I had some shrimp in there for a week and read around the forums then decided to remove them. Instead I added live rock which has been serving me good. My levels are working out but its not ready yet for any fish.

My point of advice just be patient and add live rock it will cycle naturally.

When I had my 12 gallon hex tank. I left the shrimp in there til it dissolved. I had live sand and live rock.

If you are adding shrimp, you need to leave them in until they fully dissolve. Also the most important thing is to test you ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite every other day and record the levels. Make sure your ammonia spikes and drops. Same for nitrite and nitrate. Once youve spiked on each of those, and dropped to zero in ammonia and nitrite, then you are fully cycled. It takes time and patience. Also, in case you are wondering, leave the lights off during the cycle and no water changes.

you can just buy pure ammonia from the grocery store and add some. you can skip the hassle of waiting for the shrimp to decompose AND the smell.
