well when you first get an ammonia source (live rock, a damsel, food) the ammonia will start to rise which will be converted into nitrites, so you will have ammonia and nitrites.
as those two things start to rise, those nitrites will start to become nitrates. and as more and more ammonia is created the nitrites will get a little higher and your nitrates will spike or get really high. after the spike, things will start to go downhill ammonia will start to become less and less followed by nitrites and nitrates. this is usually where people will get the algae. then when your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrate are 0 you are Good!! :)

but if you don't add an ammonia source like a fish, all that bacteria that you waited for to develop will start to die off
