Turn off your skimmer and add an air stone to keep the oxygen levels up.

Yes, I would run your system with the return pump on. This will also help with oxygen levels.

I just checked my package of chemiclean, I see why you're asking that question, it's not clear from the box instructions. Just a side note, phosphate levels may be 0 if the algae is eating it before it can register on a test, it may show a spike after algae is gone, so just watch for that. Hopefully someone who's used chemiclean will answer with their experience.

Leave your tank's return on, but turn off your Octopus, any UV sterilizer or ozonizer, and remove any carbon filtration from the time of treatment to 24 hours after. The directions say to make sure your oxygen levels are good by using an airstone or other aerator.

EDIT - Oops, there were no replies when I started this post... got distracted. :)

Yeah, it sure is difficult! I had green hair algae along with the red slime, what a mess! It's been gone for five months now, I watch carefully for any signs that may lead to it again, but I'm new to the hobby and obviously can't guarantee I'll catch the signs...but I'll keep tryin!

Chemiclean is only a bandage solution- figure out whats causing it and correct that and you'll not only be algae free in 1-2 months, but you'll never have to worry about it again.

For most people, this cause is a simple one - not doing enough water changes with no other method of removing nitrates/phosphates being implemented.
