My 120 will eventually end up with these fish in there. 2clownfish 2pajama cardinals 2lyretail Anthias 1foxface rabbitfish 1blue spotted Jawfish 1powder blue tang 1sailfin tang 3blue chromiis 1blue hippotang and 1green mandarin.

Wow I think it sounds like its too crowded already. The chromiis stay together most of the time, the mandarin is usually foraging for pods behind the rocks and caves, the jawfish will stick to a burrow the clowns stay in one spot in the tank as will the pajama cardinals, unless its feeding time and as for the rest they roam quite often. My whole aquascape is set along the back of the wall so it leaves quite a bit of room to roam and lots of caves for hiding spots. Does it seem like I am overstocked? I have a 40gallon breeder tank sump with refugium built in and a 220gallon rated super skimmer.

It sounds like I am overstocked just typeing this but I wanted to get an opinion on it just because well I want to either justify my fears or negate them.

The foxface is only about 4inches long and the blue hippo is about 5inches as is the powder blue

    That's a lot of fish:eek:
I'm sure it looks beautiful though.
It is IMO overstocked a bit but there are a couple variables that will make that decision.
Is it a reef tank or FOWLR?
    How much KR (lbs)
    Protein Skimming?
The powder blue may be the only one that will eventually require a larger tank. The sailfin, foxface and hippo are safe in a 120 IMO

eventually when I get my own place though and become a doctor I plan on getting a 700gallon reef tank built into one of my walls in the house, I might even say owell and get a 1000 gallon tank and have it professionally taken care of. I want it to fill my whole wall lets just say that. I only have like 6 years of schooling left haha

Any corals? I think you should always consider the adult size of the fish and you always want to accomodate their needs. I have a 110g and would love to get a powder blue but think my tank is too small.... plus the general rule is one inch of fish (measured from the nose to the base of the tail) per 5 gallons of system saltwater.... but it also depends on your filtration system and other factors. So, do your math and you got your answer.

Usually if you have to ask if you are overstocked, you are. I think your list is fine except for the 3 tangs. As they grow it will get pretty crowded so I would perhaps only have 2 smaller type tangs such as a yellow tang, purple tang or kole tang. You could probably get away with a hippo too, but they do get pretty large.

I think your fine for a 120 as long as you maintain it properly. IMO the with the advances in reef keeping technologies the general rule of 1" per 5 gallons no longer applies.

As far as the tangs go, yep they are going to grow. They are going to grow and get big and when they do your will have 2 choices, get a bigger tank or catch them and take them in and trade them in for a couple more which is what I will have to do also, but thats a few years off so right now just enjoy them.

In my 75 gallon reef I currently have a Kole, Hippo and Yellow tang, 1 red Fire fish, 1 fat a$$ed 6 line, 1 sweetheart GSM Clown, a pair of False Percs, 1 yellow watchman goby and a very small Orbic Bat, 6 peppermint shrimp, 2 brittle stars, a 4.5" Crocea Clam and about 40 blue legs and at least 70 or so various snails. Plus I have about 25 different Corals from a 6" Brain to about 20 or so different mushrooms.

My tank has been stocked like this far almost 2 years except for the Bat which was added about a month ago and I haven't had any issues at all. But I am very meticulous about keeping the tank clean and doing water changes every 2 weeks. I run a bulk reef supply Dual GFO/carbon reactor that I change every 4 weeks, alternating.

I also have a 50 gallon sump and a 37 gallon Fuge also. AquaC EV120 Skimmer, Mag 7 return pump and a closed loop with a ReeFlo Dart 3600 GPH Pump.

I think you're ok....if you have a kick a$$ skimmer and the right amount of LR you should be fine.
As stated b4 just watch the growth on the tangs!
