Hey everyone I am new to the site and a beginner with a 29 gallon tank. Everything has been going well over the last 3 months. Three weeks ago I did a partiel water change. Since then algae has corrupted my tank. The water is so green I can barely see inside. I have been doing partial water changes every couple of days (usually 10%) and it is getting worse. It is not in direct sunlight, the fish aren't overfed, and water conditions are fine. Help! Is it my filter? Do I need to keep the light off? Keep changing the water? I am clueless.

I havr 2 percula clowns and two anthias. One leather coral (not doing well). All of my cleaner crew have died as well as a starfish. I also have a protein skimmer in there. We have been buying saltwater from a local saltwater fish store. As I said all was well, tank was crystal clear, did a partial water change (25%), with the store bought saltwater and then the algae problem began. Can't get it under control. Started using my own mixture of tap water, salt, and water conditioner in the last few days. What else can I add to help solve this mystery? I appreciate the feedback so far!

Id imagine changing the water out is not helping the situation. by adding new water you are more than likely adding nutirents back into the water helping the algea to grow. but without more information from you thats about as far as we can go.

It is a 29 gallon reef tank (only one leather coral so far). I have two Anthias and two Percula clown. I have a three tiered filtration system with a protein skimmer. Lots of live rock.

I have been using saltwater from the local saltwater fish store. Then a few days ago I started making my own water at home. This was after all the algae took over in the water.

Still need to know your water source? As tap water can contain phosphates among other stuff the will cause an algae bloom, so doing more water changes can actually make it worse.

I had been using saltwater from the fish store but it is far away so I started making my own water from tap, water conditioner and salt. When I did the water changes with the store bought it actually seemed to get worse. No matter what I do it get worse. Fish are now dying.
