I have a 55 gal plastic drum that originaly was used to ship sliced jalapenos. I want to use it for RO/DI water and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how I should clean it prior to use. I am considering vinegar, baking soda, and bleach as a few options. Any help or experience with such is greatly appreciated

I think you are on the right track, but I don't know how much the peppers leached into the drum.

I don't know how you would clean & completely sterilize the drum so you don't mess up the tank. Maybe a weak bleach solution? Or, what I did on my used tank was 3/4c distilled white vinegar to 1g water. You could use up to a cup of vinegar per gallon.

everyone forgets bleach is chlorine, chlorine will evaporate completely so hit it with a bunch of bleach and water and let it sit for a few days, problem should be solved lol

rinse it out then use bleach.

then rinse it then dry it.
then to be safe smell it for any jalpeno or bleach smell before filling it.

Yup, I'd do a moderate bleach solution, let it sit for a couple maybe three days, air dry for a couple more.

    Re: cleaning the barrel

Hi this is Vicki~ I'm new here and just had to speak up and say (hopefully this point hasn't been made in previous threads/didn't read them yet)that if your barrel is made of wood I personally would NOT use any bleach! I would use tons of regular kitchen salt and super hot water for a number of series~(scrubbing/rinsing) you don't want to bandaid a pepper organism with chemicals that might absorb into the wood also. I don't know about the baking soda (it is an organic? matter) but I'd have to ask myself if there were potential traces of baking soda going in my water(unintentionally) how harsh would it be on my tank's bacterias & live things?

I would start with the vinegar to help neutralize the oil from the jalapeño peppers that may be in the jug, then rinse well with Hot water before refilling with a weak bleach solution and let it sit for a day. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry for a day or 2, any residual bleach will evaporate during the air dry.
