My husband and I are thinking about building a 40 Breeder into an AIO Frag tank. I am going to be buidling a false wall and baffles for the back wall. Does anyone know of a decent cheap skimmer that may fit in say...a 4" compartment? We are only planning on housing a couple of clowns and the rest zoas and various other frags. Does anyone have any insight on how to do this and make it work? Thanks so much!

why not just drill it and add it to your system

Well, another function of it was to be my emergency tank if anything goes wrong with my 110. I just found out that the seals on my tank are over 12 years old! But maybe I should drill it...

    Pepperyfox's husband here...

We were thinking about not drilling it for the sake of simplicity and for keeping it as cheap as possible. We have an existing cabinet that we want to use for a stand and right now it houses all of our fish stuff. I was planning on just reinforcing it. Also considering how low our bio load will be with just frags and a couple of clowns, and maybe a blenny for algae control. Also, even though we call it a "frag" tank, it really is going to be a zoanthid garden, just with smaller (softer)rocks to frag from and some racks on the sides.. We are planning on running a ton of live rock in the display portion and rubble in the refugium section. So with all that being said, as I see it, the compartment will be just big enough for a filter sock holder and therefore will probably need a super narrow skimmer....maybe a hydor slim skim? Is that my best bet? If not then I guess a CPR backpack skimmer...I see anything wrong with what we are wanting to do? We would love to hear any positive/ negative feedback! :)

I'll have to look up the model, but I have a reef octopus HOB on my 40 breeder. It's my only filter I have on the tank and it skims like a beast. I think I paid 125 or so on aquacave, I'd definitely recommend it.

Having seen a demo of the Hydor I think it's a worthy choice. Tunze is another more expensive option.
