I am in the planning stages of building a new sump/fuge as I have found that my current long running sump is failing. I am looking at 55 gallon aquariums. I will be buying the tank off craigslist most likely. #1 If the aquarium has ever been medicated with copper etc will I have an issue with this? #2 If the aquarium has held reptiles in the past will this cause any issues? I should note that I plan to bleach the entire aquarium and let it sit for at least 24 hours. Then I will thoroughly wash with vinegar and RODI water. Thanks!

if the tank has had copper i would pass on it. i beleive the copper can get into the silicone and wont be a good thing. not sure about the reptile thing though, im assuming you could wash with bleach or vinager and give it a good rinse to get any nastys out.

Beware because they make reptile tanks also. It wont look good when you fill it with water and the sides are bulging out.

Good point. I hadnt thought of this until now. Reptile tanks usually have thinner glass I believe. I posted a wanted add on craigslist. Ive had several responses but they cant always tell me with any certainty the tank has not been medicated.

Plus one here. Reptile tanks themselves are not as think/quality of glass to hold the weight of water. Copper dosed tanks I would steer clear of also. There are some people that say that the silicon doesn't absorb copper, but if it does is it really worth it? There are lots of people getting out all the time you can pick up really nice stuff cheap!

Thanks for the advice. I am still searching. The major problem I have is most people dont know if the tank has ever been medicated or not. So I am emailing-calling multiple people with questions they cannot answer. Hopefully somebody will come along that will have the answers I need.
