After luring the Jumbo Squid to the surface with bait, the National Geographic team sprang into action and managed to wrestle a video camera mounted to a synthetic sleeve over the squid and later capture first ever footage of jumbo squids acting naturally in their environment. The footage showed the squid "strobing red and white and flailing its arms" further suggesting that the squids communicate with colors. This was their 2nd attempt as the first camera had red LED lights that was not well received and was attacked. See the whole footage on "Dangerous Encounters With Brady Barr: Cannibal Squid" this Friday.

Back at BAYMAC I was pressing my camera as close as possible to a couple production versions of the new Cannon LED Pendants by Ecoxotic when Ike flipped the switch and broadsided me. Did I see stars? I saw the Milky Way. The Edistar multi-chip 50w LED is intense and goes where no other LED has gone before... to the bottom of very deep aquariums. Available later today for $549. More below.

3reefers have been asking about the new LED kit by Ecoxotic, so here are some juicy pics and a spec sheet. If you are looking for some quality LED modules to mount in your slim hood (optional hanging kit available) then Ecoxotic could have you covered with the 12k Panorama. Between the nicely finished lens and heatsink are 24 10k White LEDs and 12 455nm blue LEDs. Each Retro module is 8" x 9.5" x 2.5". A remote meanwell driver with on/off switch is included. Available mid-august. $349 MSRP.

I've always been a bit jaded about extra hardware on my tank as they have to plug in somewhere, but I would install a whole new GFCI in the wall just to plug in the Reef Angel controller. Roberto from Reef Angel had me sold with 'open-source.' Not only will the Reef Angel handle your ATO, lights, wavemaker and monitor pH and temp out of the box.... you can download cool code that will delay your halide after a power outage and turn your heater on and off at certain temperatures and much more for FREE! Following the Google Group emails this week has been an eye opener. A serious score for $200, available now. More below.

Reef Angel: Open-Source Controller

Reef Angel is the first controller kit to offer the reefing hobbyist full control of hardware and software to accommodate all their reefing needs.
At your fingertips is the ability to create the most sophisticated controller you will ever need. With a very simple to use...

The details echoed in my head briefly before quickly exiting... "High powered CREE LEDs, experimental refugium light, pendants coming this summer.." I wish I could recall more. But the honest truth is all I could do was stare at the copious amounts of aluminum. Beautiful, polished aluminum laid on thick with groovy heat sinks. I became light headed. I knelt for a better view or was it to supplicate? I don't know. I just know that when I die I want Chris from Nanocustoms to make my coffin. Amen.
