A recent trend with LED lights was on display at MACNA: Wi-Fi control. A great little example was The Prime by Aqua Illumination. This 45w nano LED lamp would be perfect for those of us with nano cubes possibly up to 18" based on the intensity I saw coming from this 4.88" x 4.88" x 1.34" lamp. The white/blue color was nice to the eye as well. Inside there are 13 LEDs with colors of white, green, violet, red, deep blue and very deep blue. The fixture had a polished modern look that is vented with a small fan at top and I liked the overbuilt aluiminum arm for an extra $50. The light itself will only be $199. For a quality fixture at a great price, with Wi-Fi control that allows you to control it via your phone or computer - The Prime should be a hit for AI.

Getting up close to the Maxspect Gyre Riptide Generator was on my short list at MACNA and it did not disappoint. The Gyre can move some water. Especially when speed was oscillated by the prototype controller. And, for a large wave-waver, the Gyre can be low-profile when mounted near the surface horizontally or vertically in the corner. The sheer flow created from the Gyre launched the entire plane of water across to the other side where it bounced back generating the "gyre flows." This design eliminates dead-spots much more effectively than traditional powerheads. Keeping food suspended is an easy task and should make some corals happier. The first model to arrive will be the 35w mid-range version this October. The 35w will produce 4200 GPH and will retail for $299.

Join me for a pic-heavy stroll through MACNA 2014. My camera battery was charged and my belly full from the wonderful fare of Denver, Colorado. It took all I had as MACNA was dense with new products, great speakers and more than a few frags. You might want to sit down. Here come 78 photos in the first installment of the 3reef MACNA 2014 series.

Did you see this? Incredible. A nearly 5 foot nurse shark caught on a fisherman's line becomes the unintended bait for a monster goliath grouper that takes it in one bite. Repeat: A nearly 5 foot shark in one bite! One would think if a goliath grouper could take out a shark they would be the kings of all they survey, but they themselves have been fished to near extinction earning protected status. The goliaths are on the rebound in south west Florida where remaining mangroves protect their young. But pressure is mounting to repeal their protection. That would be unfortunate for fish that can grow nearly 8 feet long, weigh 680 pounds and eat a sizable shark... in one bite.

Move over ocean-life, here comes the Supersonic Submarine. A team of Chinese scientists recently said they have created a fluid sub design that can create an air bubble around the sub allowing it to travel at a much higher rate of speed with less friction. Apparently this is the 'drag car' of underwater propulsion - supercavitation - the Soviets developed it for torpedoes. They go fast in a straight line. But the Chinese scientist at Harbin have come up with a way to steer by altering the cavitation bubble with liquid on the exterior that creates friction. Just read it. Sounds like a dangerous thing to test out - and not just for the local fish. But so is drag racing.
