its a powerhead just to create flow in the tank.
the output moves back and forth to create a wave-ish motion. from what i have read after a while the "sweeping action" nozzle stops because it gets clogged with algae, tube worms, etc.

i don't know what else to say i haven't used one personally

Are they needed in a tank? If not then I'll reconsider buying it

The powersweeps are nice powerheads but like every piece of equipment they need the proper maintenance to continue working like they should. You can't just put any pump in the water, forget it and expect it to work forever.
I have 2 powersweeps in my 46 that are nearly completely covered in coralline now and continue to sweep flow from side to side just like they should because I keep them in good working order. ;)
